4 Green Ways to Dispose of Your Pumpkin After Halloween

Servpro is all about the environment, and so here are some suggestions to keep your pumpkin out of the landfill when it comes time to dispose of it.

Green ways to dispose of your pumpkins

Compost It
Break the pumpkin into pieces and add it to your compost bin.  If you don’t have your own compost pile, ask your friends or neighbours, or perhaps the local community gardens if they compost. Calgary has a citywide leaf and pumpkin compost program; for more information and drop off locations check here

Cook It!
The inside of a pumpkin is the best part, so make sure you take the time to turn it into something delicious.  Pumpkin bread, cookies, pancakes, muffins, smoothies, soups… options are endless. The area attached to the pumpkins skin is where all the nutritional value comes from.  Find a great recipe for your pumpkin here and remember to place any unused portion in the compost or garden.

Donate it – to the Zoo!
Did you know that many local zoos like to offer pumpkins as seasonal treats for the animals?  To name a few, squirrel monkeys, tigers and hippos love a pumpkin treat.  If you’re close to a zoo, give them a call and see if you can donate your pumpkins to become local organic zoo food!  You might even be able to go and watch the animals enjoy their treat and make it a family event.

Bird Feed
Feeding your leftover pumpkin to your backyard birds is perfectly safe. Make sure you slice it into manageable pieces for them. They only eat the soft part around the skin, help them out and make snacking manageable.
